Seasons

Q1: When I went to  Australia this christmas break it was sunny, warm and we went camping. Why was the temperature never as hot as it is in Singapore?

A1:        The temperature is never as hot because the Earth is at a tilt and the half of the Earth that is tilted towards (Southern half) the Sun is closer so there is more heat and the more North you go it gets cooler.

Q2: My friends went to Europe during the christmas break snow skiing how could this be?

A2:       They were on the North side of the Earth and that is where the Earth is tilted away which is receiving less heat from the Sun making it colder.

Q3: During the summer break I spend my time in Holland. The sun does not set until 12:30 am at night and rises around 5:00am and yet during the winter time my dutch friends complain how they hardly see sunshine,  Explain.

A3: Since the Sun light in the summer of Holland is direct at the time due to the tilt of the Earth. When it is Winter, it has indirect sunlight due to that half of the Earth being tilted away from the Sun

Q4: If you were to explain to a Singaporean, who has never left the country, what spring and fall were what would you say?  Why does this happen and why not in Singapore?

A4: Spring and Autumn are the seasons that are in between the main seasons Winter and Summer. They are the process in between the two hemispheres changing distance between the direct and indirect sunlight. This doesn't happen in Singapore because we are near the Equator. Where the sunlight shines on the equator all year round.
